Bio: Madhavi Malalgoda Ariyabandu

Madhavi Malalgoda Ariyabandu is a development professional with over 25 years of experience, with special interest on political economy of development and disasters. She has been engaged in the field of disaster risk reduction in different professional capacities- community interactions and research, writing, training, and partnership building, backed with extensive field experience.

Her educational background is Agronomy and Agriculture Economics, and her interests include languages and writing.  Madhavi has authored and co-authored a number of publications on varying aspects of disasters; Disaster Communication, Livelihood Centred Approach to Disaster Management, Gender and women’s issues.  The publication ‘Gender Dimensions in Disaster Management; a Guide for South Asia’, published just before 2004 Asia tsunami has been translated into four South Asian languages; Hindi, Urdu, Tamil and Sinhala, from the original English edition.

Madhavi is the 2004 recipient of the Mary Fran Myers Award, presented for ‘advancing women’s careers in emergency management and the academy and for promoting gendered disaster research’, awarded by the Gender and Disaster Network (GDN) and the Natural Hazards Center, at the University of Colorado, USA.

Madhavi led the Reducing Vulnerability Programme at Intermediate Technology Development Group (ITDG) South Asia for over 5 years; was the coordinator of the South Asia network for Disaster Mitigation ‘Duryog Nivaran’. She also served as the National Gender Advisor and Project Manager for Micro Enterprise Recovery programme in the Tsunami Recovery Programme, United Nations Development Programme(UNDP) Sri Lanka.

Currently she is attached to the United Nations office for Disaster Risk Reduction (UNISDR) as the Regional Programme Officer for South Asia, and serves as the Gender Focal Point of the organization. Madhavi, a national of Sri Lanka is married with two children, is currently living in Bangkok, Thailand.
